What is this blog all about?

The main purpose of this blog is to give an overview of the things I do, in my everyday life, in order to improve my English. Since I am a very lazy person, I mostly read, and watch movies, and do things which make it possible for me to improve my vocabulary, my grammar and my accent without getting bored... So this blog is going to be about the books I read, the movies I watch, and some other things which I find relevant (or not)...

I hope you'll like it! Don't hesitate to leave comments if you have any suggestions concerning what I should write about!!

Though it's cold inside...

2011 is here! 2010 is over!

I wish you a happy new year, sweet things to eat, soft things to wear, warm things to sleep in, and nice people all around you. I wish you love, joy, health and glory, I wish you sunshine and fresh air, I wish you all the best, and then something even better.

It's beginning to look a lot like christmas

When it's the 19th of December, you're alone and far from home, and yet you feel a sudden urge to turn on all the lights, light all the candles, grin like a looney and call everyone you know to tell them you love them, I think it's a sure sign.

Christmas is coming.

:)

... and a happy new year !

I may, or may not have used the same post title last year, but, well, it's seasonal. And appropriate.

In any case : Happy New Year reader ! I am off to Berlin, to celebrate the new year with my friends and enjoy a bit of the German atmosphere. First time in Berlin in my whole life, though I've studied German for... wait... 12 years. Quite a lot von die Motivation !

My plans for next year : Eat less, work more and spreaaaad love. What about yours ?

I wish you all the best, anything you might wish for yourself (except if it involves whatever form of death and destruction), and love, health, glory and riches on top of that !

Looking for you, Mr Castang

Well, well, reader, I intended to spend the afternoon doing useful things and studying and being a good girl, but I got glued to the couch by the sweet sweet christmas spirit (it acted a bit like molten toffee, you know, and then you're trapped, forever). Since I am alone at home, I turned on the TV, and then all was lost...

It started with the 101 Dalmatians, (Hugh Laurie ! Incredible ! Hugh Laurie's in that !) then it went on with the stupidest film in history called something like "two lovers at christmas" or something, and then I changed channels and went on the watch a bit of something with Katie Holmes and Buffy's Riley (can't remember his name) and that was just so sweet it was too much (gave me the feeling of having eaten too many bredalas though I haven't even started with the Christmas anti-diet yet), so I changed channels again, and IT WAS DR WHO !!! So all is lost, I guess I'll just sit here until I'm completely rotten. :3

Anyway, since they are episodes I have already seen at least twice (oh that "Blink" one with the statues... Just brilliant, that's what it is), I figured I'd get my laptop, and tell you about my parisian week-end in a few words, while raising my eyes to enjoy the sight once in a while !

So ! Paris ! It was really great seing all my friends and we had a great time ! We went to the theater too, to see a play by Edouard Baer, who's a French actor and comedian, and it was absolutely brilliant. You know that thing I had with capes ? It has not improved since "A la recherche de Mr Castang". If you have the opportunity to check his work out, do, it's really cool. And he's got that talent to set my mood to great for at least two days. So thank you V, (my best friend V) for inviting me, it was a really great play and I loved it !

Apart from that, we went around, saw the Eiffel Tower, went to the Galeries Lafayettes and the Printemps and the Palais de l'Elysée, and it was really cool. Paris really is a great city, and it's particularly lovely at christmas, what with all the lights and all.

I also wanted to congratulate my friend A. who succeeded in entering the french Police Forces, which is her lifelong dream. I'm so happy for her, I figured I'd tell you, even though I don't think she comes here very often ! Yeah for you A !!!

Well, I hope the christmas spirit has not glued you to the couch, and if it has, well, move on, enjoy the cold, bake some cookies and have a nice day !!

Glad tidings we bring...

Happy new year!!! Happy New Year! Love, health, money, fame, glory, riches, and anything you might wish for!! I don't know if you have made any resolutions for the new year, as far as I am concerned, I stopped trying, because I never keep them anyway. But good luck with them if you have, however!!

Today, I wanted to tell you a little bit about what I watched on TV yesterday, i.e. Dr Who. OK, reader, Dr Who is far from being perfect. For one thing, it might well be the ugliest TV series since "Xena, the warrior princess". Which is really really ugly. I watched some pieces of an episode of Xena today, and it's amazing how big a percentage of the dialogs is actually composed of screams and yells. You nearly need subtitles to explain what she really means... "Yaaaaah!" means "Don't touch my sweet Gabrielle, but "Waaaargh" means, "don't you touch my sweet Gabrielle". It's all very varied. Anyway. This post is not about "Xena the warrior Princess", even though there is a lot to say about her, it's about Dr Who. Where was I. Oh, yeah, bad things about Dr Who.
I never understand what's happening, and I never have any doubt that things are going to be OK, so the suspense is a little wasted. Also I hate his name, because when I try to talk about the show in French, I never know how to pronounce it. Comes out kinda like "docteur ouh" which is ridiculous.

But, even if I only saw three episodes so far, and never any one of them from beginning to end, I must say that Doctor guy, whichever weird-looking Englishman he's played by, has got something for him. I don't know if it ever happens to you reader, but sometimes, you watch something on TV, or at the cinema, and you think "I could fall in love with that character." Well, it was like that with Dr Who. Even though I hardly know him, and stuff. By the way, if you are a guy, and thinking about Scarlett J. right now, please, write me an e-mail, I have some stuff to tell you, about her naming her breasts and... well anyway, this post is not about Scarlett J. either (thank God for that). It's about Dr Who.
He was there yesterday (in my TV set, I mean, I'm not that crazy...), asking two different girls in two different episodes to follow him to the end of the world and stuff, and had it been me, I would have said yes, both times. Even though he's likely to be half my size and weigh less as me. Less than 5 movies-or-TV-characters spring to my mind when I think of people who have made me feel like that... Paul Bettany in Wimbledon, Nathan Fillion in Firefly (all episodes), Spike in Buffy the Vampire Slayer (can't remember the names of the episodes, there are too many of them) and also Denzel Washington in Much Ado About Nothing. It's not just about being good looking, and stuff, it's not even about the movie being great (as has been demonstrated by Dr Who), it's just some kind of feeling that I get sometimes. Weird.

Anyway. I have to go now, and annoy my sister, who's trying really hard to get some work done in spite of her being sick. It's my holy mission. Or maybe I'll just go bake some bredalas in the kitchen (weird how no one ever bakes bredalas in the bathroom...) in order to keep it up with the indigestion. Ah, the blessed post-Christmas days... That sweet taste of... no, OK. Well, reader, let me once again wish you all the best for the new year, truckloads of happy events, beautiful days, party and enjoy every 525 600 minutes of it. (Thank you, Rent, for sparing me the good half hour it would have taken me to actually count those...)

And a partridge in a pear tree...

Christmas carol time, reader!!

Colmar is so pretty right now, all the trees are frosted, I wouldn't go out for the world and I curse myself for choosing such a ridiculour christmas outfit (No sleeves. WHAT WERE YOU THINKING YESTERDAY'S CLAIRE??? Why did you resent today's Claire so much that you wanted her to catch pneumonia???) But well, you know, it's christmas time, so even if my feet are going to turn blue, even if my fingers fall off, it wont be sufficient to ruin my mood.

It must be the sugar I guess, from all the bredalas my mother baked... I don't know if you know what a bredala is, reader, it's the name of the little cookies we eat at christmas in Alsace. Well, some people bake them, and the blessed rest eat them. While the others keep baking in order to keep the stock high enough to feed the whole Russian army, in case it comes on foot all the way from Russia just to come and say hi to my grand-mother in Oberentzen.

Anyway. The purpose of this post is not to talk about Christmas in Alsace, the purpose of this post was to get you singing "and a paaartriiiiige in a pear treeeeeee" at the top of your voice (the only real way to celebrate Christmas...) and to wish you a very merry christmas time!! I hope you'll have a really nice evening and all the presents you have wished for, and send you lots and lots of love from Colmar!!
PS: Here's a special mention for my sister Marion, who'll come later this year, from Belgium, and for her boyfriend V, who's going to have a lonely 25th December (If I understood everything properly...) I just wanted to tell you that we'll keep smoked salmon and a little foie gras for you guys!!! Can't wait till you're here!
